With the due date of my second child coming up I’ve been thinking a lot about my hair health lately. After the birth of my first, my hair became extremely weak and was falling out in handfuls. Determined to avoid that this time around, I’ve been stocking up on information to keep my hair and scalp healthy. During my research I came across a quote from a hairstylist about the importance of exfoliating your scalp.
Duh! Why have I never thought of this before?!
It is common knowledge that regular skin exfoliation removes build-up of dead skin cells, oil, and dirt, so why would it be any different for your scalp? Jumping at the chance for a new DIY project, I came up with a recipe for a scalp sugar scrub, using the shampoo I already own and use daily.
So, why use sugar to exfoliate your skin?
The simple answer is that it’s a natural exfoliant that dissolves well and most people tend to have it on hand. However, sugar has some amazing skin benefits.
First of all, its a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into your skin. For an area that tends to dry out easily because of over-shampooing and environmental factors, this is a definite plus. Sugar is also a natural source of glycollic acid, which penetrates the skin and encourages new cell regeneration.
Scalp Sugar Scrub Recipe
1 C Sugar
5 Drops Grapefruit Essential Oil
5 Drops Geranium Essential Oil
Combine all ingredients a bowl and store in a jar with a lid. If you want a thicker consistency, add in more sugar as you go.
To use: once a week massage into scalp for 1-3 minutes, rinse, and condition.
doTERRA’s Protecting Shampoo is my daily go-to when it comes to cleaning my hair. It is a unique combination of plant extracts, along with CPTG Wild Orange and Lime essential oils, which provide gentle lathering, moisturizing, and cleansing to the hair and scalp.
I chose to add Grapefruit and Geranium essential oils to this recipe because each one is known for having amazing skin benefits. Grapefruit is known for its cleansing and purifying benefits and Geranium gives hair a vibrant, healthy glow. If you would like to learn more about essential oils, click here.
