40 Things I Want My Daughters To Know

Watching my daughter develop both physically and mentally this past year has been such a privilege. She does something new every hour, which either has me impressed, surprised, irritated, or laughing. And though there are situations where she leaves me walking away pulling my hair out, I realize more and more everyday that this is the easy part. Growing up is hard and there is so much I want my daughters to know that, I believe, will lead them to a healthy and happy life.

Even though this list will never be complete, I wanted to put together a few things that I wish for my daughters to know as they grow into women. This is more of a personal reminder to myself, but I thought I would share for anyone else who has similar thoughts.

40 Things I Want My Daughters To Know

  1. “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
  2. The “good life” isn’t easy to come by…but it doesn’t have to be hard either.
  3. You don’t have to have it “figured out” by the time you finish high school.
  4. There is so much potential within  you.
  5. “Above all else, have courage and be kind.”
  6. You are not the product of someone else’s expectations.
  7. Though you are beautiful, that is not your only worth…nor is it the most important. Everyone is beautiful in their own way.
  8. Homemaking is NOT the woman’s job…but it isn’t a shameful job either.

  10. You are not required to be “lady-like.”
  11. Be yourself, but be respectful of other people in the process.
  12. Don’t ever be afraid to speak up.

  15. Not only is it okay, but it is admirable to know when to ask for help. It took me a long time to learn that.
  16. Eating good, healthy food is a must for a long, happy life…but the occasional junk food splurge isn’t going to kill you.
  17. Find that one movie that you can watch over and over again, it’s such a cheap form of therapy.
  18. Educating yourself is a lifelong journey. College degrees may help you reach career goals, but they aren’t the end goal…and they aren’t a requirement for success either.
  19. Not wanting kids does NOT make you any less of a woman.
  20. Don’t spend your life sugar coating things for other people. Speaking your mind isn’t rude if you speak from a place of respect. Be honest and blunt…never rude.
  21. Picking up after yourself is a must. Don’t walk around leaving messes for others to handle. That goes for all aspects of your life.
  22. Having one amazing friend will always be better than having 20 mediocre friends.
  23. Just because you don’t understand something, doesn’t mean you’re dumb. Everyone’s brain is wired differently.
  24. Credit is a dangerous game. Everyone will tell you this but you wont really get it until you experience it yourself.
  25. I want you to live an amazing and adventurous life…but I also want to lock you in a cushioned box.

  27. A good laugh can change your entire day.

  31. You do not owe someone your loyalty just because they are family.
  32. You will always find adventure within a book.
  33. Be respectful of other people’s’ suffering. Just because it isn’t visible, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
  34. Getting enough sleep is important, but don’t get into the habit of sleeping your day away.
  35. Busy and productive are NOT the same thing. Once you learn this, your life will become so much easier.
  36. You don’t have to be “fit”, but a little exercise is good for anyone.
  37. Take some time each day to be silly; it will keep your mind young.
  38. Everyone has their asshole moments, give them a chance to move past it. If they are consistently an asshole, you don’t need them in your life.
  39. Mistakes are learning opportunities. You only fail if you learn nothing from it.
  40. You will always mean the world to me.
